7 Pros and Cons of Wrought Iron Fencing

Are you thinking about installing a fence around your Arlington Heights, Illinois yard? If so, you have a number of different materials to choose from. One of the best fencing materials available is wrought iron, a material that’s strong, durable, and aesthetically pleasing.

Are you looking to learn more about wrought iron fencing? If so, you’re in the right place. Below, we’re going to review 7 pros and cons of wrought iron fencing. Let’s begin!

Pros:

Extreme Durability

If it’s durability you seek, you aren’t going to find a much better option than wrought iron. This material can withstand just about anything, generally thriving for over 80 years of use. It doesn’t matter whether you’re in an exceedingly rainy, sunny or windy area, wrought iron will typically get the job done with little maintenance required.

Regal Look

While aluminum fences can mimic wrought iron reasonably well, it doesn’t carry quite the same aesthetic. Wrought iron gives off an air of strength and regality. There’s something classy and prestigious about its aesthetic.

For this reason, you’ll often see it used around luxury homes. However, in truth, any type of home can aesthetically benefit from a wrought iron fence.

Excellent Security

Wrought iron fencing is about as strong as fencing comes. Unless somebody has a metal cutter, they’re not going to break through it. Also, due to the way in which it’s shaped (with vertical bars), it’s quite difficult to climb over. As long as you install it high enough, it’s nearly impossible to scale.

Because of this, wrought iron is terrific for security purposes. You can put it around your home and be almost entirely sure that it will keep out intruders.

Low Maintenance

Overall, wrought iron is an extremely low-maintenance fencing material. Regardless of how much attention you show it, it will generally hold up for over 80 years.

However, if you wish, you can still apply rust removers and primers. These substances will help to counteract water, reducing the amount of rust buildup that occurs. You might also choose to scrape off any rust that forms. It’s important to note, though, that rust typically doesn’t present itself on wrought iron until much later in the material’s life.

Cons:

High Expense

There’s really no getting around it: wrought iron fencing is expensive. Whereas aluminum fencing is usually around $32 per linear foot, and wood fencing is usually between $5 and $15 per linear foot, wrought iron fencing is usually around $35 per linear foot.

However, due to its extreme durability, wrought iron fencing will pay for itself over the years. If you have the budget, it’s a very solid fencing option.

Little Privacy

The fact is wrought iron fences provide very little in terms of privacy. Because they possess narrow, vertical bars, they are almost entirely see-through. They’re designed more for aesthetic and security purposes.

Complex Installation

Another potential con of wrought iron fencing is that it can be somewhat difficult to install. However, as long as you use a reputable fence installation company for your installation, you shouldn’t have much to worry about.
