What are the Pros and Cons of Composite Fencing?

Adding a fence to your yard can change it in a number of ways. Not only will it provide your property with an entirely new aesthetic, it will also improve the overall security and privacy of your property.

Maybe you’re thinking about adding a fence to your yard, and are trying to narrow down the options? Perhaps you’re curious about composite fencing?

Composite fencing carries a number of benefits when compared to other fencing materials, but it is not immune from drawbacks. Here are the pros and cons of composite fencing.

Pros

Overall, the pros of composite fencing far outweigh the cons. Not only is it a durable material, but an easy one to maintain as well.

  1. Very Durable

As was noted above, composite fencing offers terrific durability. With the exception of wrought iron, it’s about the most durable fencing material there is. When it comes to composite fencing, you shouldn’t expect any less than 30 years of use.

Made out of a combination of wood and plastic, it possesses substantial amounts of rigidity. This rigidity allows it to withstand trauma of all types.

  1. Very Easy to Maintain

Perhaps the best aspect of composite fencing is that it requires little to no maintenance. Because it possesses only trace amounts of wood, it’s not prone to rotting and deterioration. This means that you don’t have to apply any finishes, glazes, or otherwise in order to keep it thriving.

In addition to being resistant to weather, it’s also resistant to insects. You won’t have to worry about termites eating their way through your fence. All that will be needed is an occasional power wash.

  1. Aesthetically Pleasing

Perhaps you’re interested in a wood fence, but don’t want to worry about the maintenance that comes with it? If so, composite fencing is just what you’re looking for. This fencing possesses a very similar aesthetic to wood, but is much easier to maintain.

Available in essentially any color you like, it’s one of the most aesthetically-pleasing fencing materials on the market.

Cons

While there are cons associated with composite fencing, they pale in comparison to the pros. Nonetheless, here they are.

  1. On the Expensive Side

The reason that most people don’t opt for composite fencing is that, compared to other fencing, it’s on the expensive side. Composite fencing isn’t quite as expensive as materials such as wrought iron, but it’s substantially more expensive than wood, aluminum, chain link, and vinyl.

However, because it doesn’t require any remarkable amount of maintenance, it can save you money over time. Generally, a square foot of fencing costs around $30.00.

  1. Tends to Fade

While composite fencing possesses a generally pleasant aesthetic, it does struggle to maintain its aesthetic over time. This is especially true if your composite fencing sports a dark shade such as black, brown, or gray.

The problem is that, once the color has faded, there’s nothing you can do to reinstate the former shade. You’ll have to either live with the fade or install new fencing.
