What to Consider When Installing a Fence: Advice from a Buffalo Grove Fence Company

A fence can serve a number of purposes. It can provide security, it can provide privacy, and it can provide a new aesthetic, to name just a few capabilities. That said, not all fences are created equally. Available in a number of styles and materials, they can offer many different types of functionality.

Thinking about installing a fence in your yard? Then take it from this Buffalo Grove fence company: here are some things to consider when doing so.

Durability

One of the most important things to consider when choosing a fence material is durability. Whereas some fences can last for over 100 years, others will top out at around 25 years. While the more durable materials will usually cost more initially, they’re generally the most cost-effective overall.

The most durable materials are wrought iron and steel. Just below that is composite. Then comes wood, vinyl, and chain link.

Maintenance Needs

Every fencing material requires maintenance of some kind. However, some materials require much more maintenance than others.

The most maintenance-intensive material is wood. Not only does it need to be cleaned, but it needs to be sealed, painted, and repaired as well.

Wrought iron isn’t quite as maintenance intensive as wood, but still requires attention. It generally needs to be cleaned, de-rusted, and repainted every 3 to 5 years.

The other fencing materials (vinyl, composite, chain link) can generally get by with cleanings alone. One thing to note, though, is that they may require structural repair from time to time.

Cost

Fencing materials are available at a wide range of prices. While the most affordable materials can be purchased and installed for as little as $7 per linear foot, the high-end materials can run well over $45 per linear foot. Over the span of an entire fence, this can result in thousands of dollars of difference.

The most expensive fencing materials are wrought iron and steel. Then comes composite, which is followed by vinyl, wood, and chain link, in that order.

Security

All fences provide at least some level of security. That said, security capabilities can vary. Whereas one fence might be able to prevent trespassers from entering your property, another might be relatively easy for someone to scale.

There are two things to think about when it comes to fence security: fence height and fence strength. If the fence is too short, it might be easy for someone to scale or jump over it. If it’s too weak, it could easily be broken.

Fence height is not dictated by material. Any fencing material can be designed to accommodate any height. However, material does dictate strength. Steel is the strongest, wrought iron is the second strongest, then composite, chain link, and wood/vinyl all follow.

Privacy

The last thing to consider when choosing a fence is privacy. While some fencing materials can provide almost complete anonymity, others possess almost no privacy capabilities whatsoever.

The materials that offer the most privacy are vinyl, wood, and composite. The materials with the least privacy are wrought iron, steel, and chain link. Note, however, that the latter set of materials can be adorned with privacy slats, allowing for a decent amount of anonymity if desired.
